Fleur de lis

{ /boxes/fleurdelis }

This box was a custom stationery holder for Derek Martin. It is full bound leather with Japanese kozo and Italian paper lining. It is held closed with two bone clasps. The cover design is of two halves of a Fleur de lis pattern. It is done in red leather (on top of brown leather--making it an onlayed construction).

The back of the brown leather was sanded down until the red leather was almost peeking through. This technique was describe to me by Reg Beatty and is a variation of a "back pared onlay." Normally the leather would be shaved with a sharp blade instead of sanded (although sanding is an acceptable alternative to paring).

Please excuse the mess of my workbench.
